Newcastle Linked With Move For ‘Next Rio Ferdinand’
While news of Montpellier agreeing a transfer fee for Remy Cabella grabbed the headlines yesterday, in South London there are press reports that Newcastle are trying to sign a player described as the ‘Next Rio Ferdinand’.
Charlton’s Joe Gomez only turned seventeen in May but is rated as one of the best young players in Europe, with the Championship club having now promoted him to the first team squad ahead of the new season.
While Gomez is yet to play a first team game, he was England’s star man in May when they lifted they lifted the Under 17 European Championship trophy, a team which also included Newcastle’s Freddie Woodman and Adam Armstong.
The young Charlton defender played in all five matches in Malta and not only was he rated England’s best player, he was also widely ranked as the player of the tournament.
Understandably Charlton are trying to tie down Joe Gomez to a long-term contract but Newcastle and Everton are the two clubs reported to be leading the chase for the player’s signature this summer.
With all of Newcastle United’s links with the South London club, including Alan Pardew, it would have a been a surprise if United hadn’t been made fully aware of this emerging talent.
