Mathieu Debuchy ‘Hope Newcastle Fans Understand Arsenal An Opportunity I Couldn’t Refuse’

6 years ago

Mathieu Debuchy has stated that he hopes, “Newcastle fans understand Arsenal an opportunity I couldn’t refuse.”

The nature of modern football is that you are now used to players kissing the badge one minute and the next they are (figuratively) kissing the backsides of another club’s fans in the blinking of an eyelid.

When you have a player such as Debuchy who is so wholehearted on the pitch, it probably makes it that little more difficult to accept when they jump ship like those before them.

A lot of fans would have sympathy on the angle of Newcastle United’s lack of ambition, with Mike Ashley yet again only spending money to replace players, rather than build on the better players who were already at the club.

I think what most supporters are ‘disappointed’ with is the fact that the start of the World Cup coincided with Mathieu Debuchy talking about wanting Champions League football and that he would decide his future at the end of the finals in Brazil.

He should have kept quiet and then sorted the move out discreetly with a bit more class.

Personally I won’t be booing him, nor giving a cheer, just disappointed that he didn’t handle it better.

Mathieu Debuchy speaking to the Arsenal official website;

“I only spent a year and half at Newcastle United and it was an extraordinary experience at a club with great fans.

“I thank them from the bottom of my heart because they really supported me during my time there and I hope they understand that I had a huge opportunity which I simply could not refuse.

“I’ve come here because I really want to play Champions League football again, it’s one of the biggest competitions in the world. Everyone wants to play in it.

“I’m very proud to be joining a great club like Arsenal and to wear its colours, it’s one of the biggest clubs in the whole world.”
