Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa Confirms Interest In Transfer To French Club By Text
Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa arrived at Newcastle with the world seemingly at his feet.
Having captained unfashionable Montpellier (with Remy Cabella also in his team) to win the Ligue 1 title at the age of only 22 and made his breakthrough into the senior French squad, a move to the Premier League looked to be ticking yet another box in his rapid progress – what could possibly go wrong?
Combined with some indifferent performances at times, we then had a position where at the end of last season it was widely reported that French clubs had been made aware that Newcastle were prepared to sell Mapou, as well as Hatem Ben Arfa, Gabriel Obertan and Sylvain Marveaux.
A number of French clubs, including Marseille and Lyon, have since been credited with interest, but allegedly scared off by the price on the defender’s head and/or his wages, plus a claimed unwillingness by Newcastle to consider a loan deal.
However, St.Etienne have now shown their hand, with Le10Sport reporting some interesting quotes from the French club’s head coach, Christophe Galtier, about Mapu Yanga-Mbiwa;
“It was an interesting exchange with a player (Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa) who we have followed for a while.
“It is now in the final stages and according to texts received late last night, he seems interested in joining us.
“He’s a player who knows Ligue 1.”
