Louis Van Gaal – One Keeper Knew The Plan One Didn’t
A World Cup with so many talking points but Louis Van Gaal added a whole extra edge to Brazil 2014 with his plan to defeat Costa Rica.
With only seconds left of extra time, the [intlink id=”44603″ type=”post”]Netherlands manager brought on Newcastle United’s Tim Krul [/intlink]purely to face the penalty shootout.
The rest as they say is history, Krul replaced Jasper Cillessen and proved a match winner.
“We told Tim he would be the better goalkeeper for a penalty shootout because he is taller.
“We did not say anything to Cillessen because we didn’t want to interfere with his preparations or concentration.
“However, there is no question as to whether Cillessen will be in the starting line-up for the next match. It’s just that in this case we felt Tim Krul was the better option and he proved us right – he went the right way for every penalty.”
If Collessen honestly knew nothing about his manager’s plan, just what must he have been thinking when he saw Tim Krul warming up at the side of the pitch?
Barring injury, subbing a keeper is almost unheard of and unlike any other position, if a keeper on the bench is warming up then there is only one person he is going to replace.
