Over Half Newcastle Fans Believe Current Squad Is Bottom 6 Or Worse…

Yesterday we asked fans the question – ‘Where would Newcastle United finish next season in the Premier League with the current squad?’

That means without any potential signings or departures, just how supporters see the strength of the squad at this moment in time, now exactly six weeks before next season kicks off.

We gave fans six options, ranging from a Champions League spot to relegation, and this is how thousands of you voted.

1% Top 4

  2% Top 6

17% Top Half

26% Bottom Half

29% Bottom 6

25% Relegated

So a massive 54% of supporters believe that the current squad would either be relegated or at the very least, face a serious battle for survival next season.

While Siem De Jong is a promising signing amongst the gloom, this is on the back of losing two better quality players in Cabaye and Remy who were instrumental in Newcastle scraping tenth last time.

That horrific second half of last season is of course also fresh in supporters’ minds, with worries if that continues into the new season, it could be a nosedive that the squad will have major problems pulling up from.

The worry must be that Mike Ashley doesn’t appreciate just how weak the current squad looks and that Alan Pardew isn’t strong enough to lay it on the line for his boss.

Without some serious work in the transfer market to bring in at the very least, more goals and creativity, it could be a long long season ahead for us all.

Even if you might think relegation talk is over the top, with four in five (80%) supporters believing that Newcastle would be no better than bottom half, it would undoubtedly see United going backwards from the Ashley/Pardew claims that finishing tenth last season was a sign of progress.

As to how the picture will change in the next 6 weeks, reports of Debuchy’s almost certain departure and with no strong indications of essential quality signings geting ‘over the line’, paints an even more depressing picture.

It is in Ashley and Pardew’s hands to change that outlook and we now wait to see what, if anything, they’ll do about it.
