Families Of John Alder and Liam Sweeney Release Statements

7 years ago

It seems like a very long 48 hours since news filtered through on Friday morning that two Newcastle fans, John Alder and Liam Sweeney, were amongst the victims of the plane that came down in the Ukraine on Thursday afternoon.

Just as fellow fans, it has been a horrific experience to reflect on what has happened, never mind what the families and close friends of the two men are going through.

Liam and John’s families have now each released statements thanking their fellow fans and the general public for their support at this terrible time.

A Northumbria Police spokesman on behalf of Liam Sweeney’s family, has now asked the public to respect that they would like to be allowed to grieve in peace and also said;

“They wish to thank the public for their kind words, support and donations.

“It is not yet known which charity the donations will go to but the family will make a decision once discussed with the family of John Alder.”

While Karen Robbins, John Alder’s niece, has made the following statement on behalf of John’s family;

“We would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and wishes and the incredibly generous gestures, particularly those who have been able to share personal memories of John.

“We are struggling to comprehend what has happened but we are touched and moved by your kind words, acts and also the knowledge that so many people saw John for who he was; a kind, courteous man who was much loved as a son, brother, uncle and fan.

“Newcastle United was his life and we are proud of his dedication to the team.

“Our thoughts are with Liam’s family and the families of the other passengers at this terrible time.”

If you visited this website yesterday then you will have seen that one of the many uplifting reactions to this tragedy is both Sunderland and Newcastle fans coming together to raise money in memory of Liam Sweeney and John Alder.

A massive thank you to the Sunderland fans who stepped up and started this fundraising effort, plus the Sunderland, Newcastle and fans of many other clubs who have donated money.

The two families will be liaising with the fundraisers as to which good cause(s) the money goes to.

The figure currently stands at a staggering £15,960 raised in only 36 hours, with an equally impressive 1.825 individuals having already contributed.
