Easy To Forget Mathieu Debuchy Made European Team Of The Year
Nothing ever surprises me at Newcastle United, but I am puzzled by some fans saying that £12m for Mathieu Debuchy would be some kind of good deal.
The opinions I’ve heard mainly go along the lines of £12 being a good fee for a 28 year old (spinning the Mike Ashley line) and Davide Santon could move over to the right etc etc.
It is amazing what short memories some supporters have; Davide Santon has been pretty rubbish on the odd occasion he’s filled in on the right, as we know there is no guarantee any incoming money will be reinvested, but most importantly – Mathieu Debuchy was probably Newcastle’s bets player last year and is rubber stamping that in Brazil at the moment.
To back this up, at the end of the season just gone, Mathieu Debuchy was named in a statistics/performance analysis based European team of the year.
The first choice statistical analysis website for the football industry, whoscored.com, collect data from every player’s performance in every match, in every major European League.
At the end of the season they compared every player in the five major European leagues; England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France, and compiled a team of eleven from those players who scored highest in each position.
Only three players from the Premier League make the team with the other two from Liverpool; Suarez who scored an average of 8.4 out of 10, Steven Gerrard who rated 7.7 on average throughout the last year, while Mathieu Debuchy emerged ahead of all competition, beating the likes of Lahm, Zabaleta and Alves, with an average of 7.4..
