De Jong Passed Fit As Newcastle Make Only One Change v Wellington Phoenix

6 years ago

Taking their New Zealand tournament seriously, Newcastle United make only one change to take on Wellington Phoenix.

With West Ham going down 3-1 to Sydney FC and finishing as the clear losers in this four team competition, Newcastle and Wellington have a winner takes all match.

Playing in what looks a 3-5-2 formation, Newcastle lined up;

Elliot, Taylor, Mapou, Coloccini, Gouffran, Anita, Colback, Abeid, Haidara, De Jong, Riviere

Siem De Jong missed training as a precaution but makes the line up, with the only change Abeid for Aarons, compared to how they lined up on Tuesday against Sydney FC.

As the match kicks off it is clear there is an impressive turnout of black & whites in the stands, with estimates of over 2,000 watching on.

On the bench Newcastle have;

Alnwick, Woodman, Aarons, Armstrong, Campbell, Dummett, Perez, Satka, Vuckic

As the crowd observed a perfect minute’s silence for John Alder and Liam Sweeney, there was a moving Maori song performed on the pitch in their honour.

Kick-off ended up being fifteen minutes later than advertised, play getting underway at 5.45am (UK time).
