Alexandre Lacazette Is A No Show For Newcastle

The striker heavily rumoured to be Newcastle United’s main target, Alexandre Lacazette, is set to put those rumours to bed by signing a new extended contract to commit him to Lyon until 2019.

With fifteen goals in thirty six Ligue 1 appearances last season, Lacazette had become one of the most talked about young strikers in France.

However, the Lyon striker has now stated that;

“I will be staying at Lyon – I want to continue my development here.”

This followed comments on Friday from Lyon President,  Jean-Michel Aulas;

“We had lunch with him (Lacazette) and his agent yesterday and we’re on track to agreeing a 3 year extension. It’s for him to make the decision. He’s under contract until 2016 and he’s still a young (23) player.”

It looks increasingly difficult to see where Newcastle will sign a striker with any kind of credible goalscoring record to be the main focus of the attack. Emmanuel Riviere may prove a decent signing but his goalscoring record is nothing to shout about.

Figures of up to £16m had been speculated about Lacazette and while he scored 15 Ligue 1 goals in his breakthrough season, the striker had only scored 9 league goals in his previous 70 games (28 of them from the bench).

This summing up just how precious proven goalscorers are and the fact that Newcastle will almost certainly have to pay the going rate, both in terms of transfer fee and wages, to stand any chance of attracting one.
