Alan Pardew Second Favourite In Sack Race
In advance of the new season the bookmakers have released their Premier League Sack Race odds and Alan Pardew is second top, though in this instance that is the wrong end of the table to be.
It is a far cry from when Alan Pardew was awarded his eight year contract and the bookies rated him the least likely to lose his job, at the time the odds meant he was on a par with Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson for job security.
Ex-Newcastle Academy Director Alan Irvine has been installed as 3/1 favourite after taking over at West Brom, though Alan Pardew is breathing down his neck in equal second place along with our old mates Sam Allardyce and Harry Redknapp.
The bookies are rarely too far from the mark and after the disastrous second half of last season, they clearly smell blood if Newcastle get off to an equally dismal start and Mike Ashley is looking for somebody to take the blame.
At the other end of the spectrum even the safest managers are only rated 33/1, summing up the precarious nature of life as a Premier League manager, even title winner Pellegrini and Manchester United new boy Van Gaal at 33/1 aren’t seen as totally safe investments.
Over at the Mackems, interesting to see Gus Poyet at 25/1 seen as having earned the right to have a run at next season even if things go bad.
3/1 Alan Irvine
6/1 Sam Allardyce
6/1 Harry Redknapp
10/1 Paul Lambert
25/1 Gus Poyet
33/1 Louis Van Gaal
33/1 Manuel Pellegrini
