852 Travel To Watch Newcastle’s First Defeat Of Pre Season

Newcastle fans made up almost a third of the crowd at the newly, and horrendously, renamed S*****D*****.Com Park.

852 hardy souls travelled to Oldham to see Siem De Jong, Jack Colback and Ayoze Perez make their first appearances in Newcastle colours.

Defeats in friendlies aren’t the end of the World but can be cause for concern if they also go alongside a failure to look a class above a side who finished fifteenth in League One last season.

Of the new boys, Siem De Jong was the one who did look the part and carried almost all of United’s goal threat. Going close from a corner early on, the Dutchman scored a stunner from outside the box on thirteen minutes after his twenty five yard free-kick came back off the wall. He could have doubled the lead but struck one wide after Armstrong and Aarons created the opportunity.

Jack Colback was tidy but no more than that, while Ayoze Perez didn’t really make any kind of an impact after coming on for Armstrong on 55 minutes.

After De Jong’s goal, Oldham forced their way into the game and had their own chances before half-time, though United were marginally the better team in that opening period, with seven first teamers in the Newcastle starting eleven.

Things then went a bit haywire after the break with a series of substitutions and echoes of last season as United crumbled with Timothy Dieng heading home a corner on 69 minutes, Newcastle continuing last season’s theme of being weak at set-pieces.

Willy Gros could have won if for Oldham as he went close only minutes later but then did finish the job on 77 minutes when he beat Jak Alnwick and sealed a win for the home team.

Final Score: Oldham Athletic 2 Newcastle United 1

Newcastle: Alnwick, Anita (Satka 55), Steven Taylor (Streete 63), Mapou, Dummett (Bigirimana 70), Abeid, Colback, Gouffran (Sammy Ameobi 45), De Jong (Vuckic 63), Aarons (Haidara 63), Armstrong (Perez 55)

Crowd: 2,919 (Incl 852 Newcastle)
