Two Goal Shola Ameobi World Cup Place Brings Fierce Criticism In Nigeria

The selection of Shola Ameobi for the World Cup has provoked fierce criticism from Nigerian football fans.

With a dismal Premier League scoring record and only two goals in the past season, plus only five league starts since new year’s day, fans are questioning why Shola was given a place on the plane.

It is not only the Newcastle striker whose place has been questioned, with two other foreign based players also seen as very lucky to have made the squad.

Stephen Keshi has claimed he has picked the squad only on merit but Babatunde Michael has only scored two goals for Volyn Lutsk in the Ukrainian League, while Reuben Gabriel has only played three times for Belgian club Waasland-Beveren since signing from Kilmarnock in January.

Coach Keshi has had to defend these decisions from fans and critics alike over in Nigeria, though he has had some support, including from former Nigerian midfielder Friday Ekpo.

“He must have seen something in training and believes they fit into his tactics and style of play.

“We should not crucify Stephen Keshi or condemn any of the players picked as we do not know what happens at the training camp.

“The coach will know why he picked Ameobi, Babatunde and Reuben, whose inclusion is condemned by some.

“Keshi has his reasons for dropping 7 players that were on the provisional thirty man list – the Eagles will perform at this World Cup without players some believe did deserve to be in Brazil.”
