Siem De Jong Confirms Newcastle Contact and No Offer For His Brother

Dutch midfielder Siem De Jong has confirmed that Newcastle United have been in touch with his agent regarding potential availability in this summer window.

De Jong says he hopes to speak to Ajax officials next week to talk about his future.

A relief to many Newcastle supporters as well, with Siem De Jong confirming that brother Luuk has not been offered a permanent deal at St.James’ Park.

Talking to Soccer News in Holland Siem De Jong said;

“I really don’t know what I will do next season, I’ve spoken with the club but nothing’s sorted.

I am going to talk to Ajax next week and then I will see.

Newcastle United, where my brother played (last season), there has been a little contact with my agent, there was also contact before, but nothing concrete – Newcastle’s a great club.

I don’t know if he (brother Luuk) will be there, he is employed by Borussia Monchengladbach and hasn’t received a contract offer from Newcastle.”

Siem De Jong has been a great player in the Dutch league but as his brother has shown, that is no guarantee when translated into the Premier League.

With five different absences through injury in the past season through a thigh strain, hamstring (three separate occasions) and Pneumothorax (air trapped between lung and chest…had to Google it!), De Jong missed half the season.

However, a return of 9 goals in 28 games (all competitions) isn’t a bad return for a midfielder, who had scored 56 over the course of the previous four seasons at Ajax.

Aged 25 he is in his prime but the fact that Siem De Jong only has four minutes of competitive football (brother Luuk has 31 minutes…) and was nowhere near the DutchWorld Cup squad maybe puts his overall profile into context.

This is looking a signing that has possibilities but as for being able to hold his own in the Premier League – you pays your money and takes your chance.
