Shola’s Dream Becomes Nigeria’s Nightmare
Monday night saw Shola Ameobi’s dream become reality but it also proved to be a nightmare one for Nigeria overall.
Shola made his World Cup finals as a fifty second minute substitute for fellow Premier League striker Victor Moses.
However, despite Shola putting in a half decent performance compared to what had gone before, and threatening Iran to an extent in the air, like the rest of his teammates the exiting Newcastle striker couldn’t really stretch the opposition’s goalkeeper.
Playing against what most would regard as the most limited team to make the Brazil finals, a goalless draw looks to have ensured Nigeria’s elimination as they now have Argentina and Bosnia-Herzegovina to face. This was also by some distance the very worst match so far in this tournament, Iran showing zero ambition and Nigeria zero creativity to break them down.
The earlier Argentina win over Bosnia had given the Nigerians the best chance of qualifying, with the prospect of an expected win over Iran needed to be followed up by a win against the Bosnians to make almost certain of qualifying, while even a draw would have given them a chance.
Now however, Saturday night’s clash with Bosnia-Herzegovina needs Shola and his teammates to win for there to be any chance of progress, as Germany looked excellent and appear sure to sweep Nigeria aside in the final match.
