Shola Ameobi Now Nailed On To Lead Nigeria In World Cup
The fairytale looks to be almost complete for Shola Ameobi, after being chosen by National Coach Stephen Keshi to lead the line in Nigeria’s final pre-tournament friendly against the USA.
Shola’s selection for the squad has led to criticism from the Nigerian football public but Keshi looks to be heavily relying on Nigeria’s Premier League experienced players to take them through the group stages.
The friendly ended in a 2-1 victory for the home team with Shola playing for 65 minutes before making way as Keshi made a number of substitutions.
The score was 1-0 to the USA when Ameobi left the pitch and ended 2-1 with Moses getting the consolation.
Ironically, it was the mackem donkey Jozy Altidore who scored both goals for the Americans, his first for club or country in 2014.
It looks certain that Stephen Keshi was playing what he sees as his first choice eleven in this final warm up match, so when they face Iran in 8 days time, Shola will be there pinching himself as he makes his debut at a World Cup finals.
It will be then down to him whether he does enough to keep his place against Bosnia Herzegovina and Lionel Messi’s Argentina in the remaining group matches.
Nigeria though will have to step up a level having registered drawsa against both Scotland and Greece before last night’s defeat.
