The Uruguayan FA said that the surgery was due to an injury sustained in that final day match at Anfield, when Dummett was sent off – though the FA later rescinded it.
The media over In Suarez’ homeland though, were all over the story, with one even claiming ‘Dummett sent on with the intention to commit wilful and criminal injury to the Uruguayan striker to help England.’
This then led to messages posted on Twitter such as;
“Hi Paul Dummett, Hope some day you come here to have a nice time with friends. We have things for you – like a bullet in the head.”
For the first time, Dummett has now given his reaction to the bizarre reaction from Uruguay’s football public;
“It was pretty bad but you have to try and ignore all thta, concentrate on the football and let it go over your head.
“It has not hurt but you do see it all and it does get on your head a little bit – but you just try and forget about it. It is a lot to take but I’m guessing that you just learn that fans say things and you’ve got to learn to ignore it.
“I did not think it was a bad tackle and I was gutted that I was sent off. Looking back perhaps it was a bit reckless but I was not trying to hurt him, just trying to stop him making a quick break.
“Daft thing is that I am Welsh and so why would I be helping England at the World Cup?”
