Newcastle United Sponsor Wonga May Face Criminal Prosecution
This week Wonga were ordered to pay £2.6m to customers who were affected by a dirty tricks campaign carried out by the legal loan shark company, as well as thousands who were overcharged by them.
However, it could now get an awful lot worse for the Newcastle United shirt sponsor, with it now revealed that any potential criminal prosecution had been put to one side by City of London Police, to allow those wronged by Wonga to get their compensation as soon as possible.
As well as the overcharging of thousands of customers, Wonga were also forced to admit that they’d sent letters out from fabricated law firms which didn’t really exist, pressurising customers in arrears into paying up.
Now that the Financial Conduct Authority’s investigation is concluded, the police have said they, “Will be reassessing whether a criminal investigation is now appropriate.”
There was mass opposition against the deal Newcastle United struck with Wonga, with many fans feeling the choice of sponsor went totally against the grain of the type of company their football club should be getting involved with.
Many of those same fans and other residents of the north east are the people who have been overcharged and victims of Wonga’s dirty tricks campaign surrounding fake solicitors’ letters,
So surely this relationship between the club, which should be a flagship for everything good about Tyneside, and such a discredited company, needs to be brought to an end ASAP.
