Newcastle United – Depression and Wishful Thinking
Recently I have been drawn into many football debates regarding Newcastle and their current status/future plans. I have also had many a discussion on players to bring in and who to let go. It feels like a never ending cycle of depression and wishful thinking.
Newcastle have finally, at long last, signed a first team squad member on a permanent basis, step forward Jack Colback. I believe this to be a good signing because this is a guy who has something to prove. He needs to show that he is worthy of wearing the colours he says he adores, and to make up for all the gloating he did when he scored against us. He may not be a prolific goalscorer but it’s nice to have someone you can be guaranteed passion from.
Another player I believe Newcastle should consider getting, is Luuk De Jong.
Although this guy didn’t shine (not at all really) whilst he was here for 4/5months, he obviously has some talent which is waiting to come out. We all know that the Dutch league is not the most difficult in the world to perform in, however, you do not go from prolific goalscorer to Emile Heskey in the space of a couple of seasons.
Yes, Luuk found it hard in the more demanding Bundesliga, and then even more difficult in the Premier League, but he did at times look to be making the right kind of runs, the right passes, and with a bit more luck…
Remember, the guy is only 23 years old, he is still learning his trade. I would say that if we could get this guy for a few million pounds, we would be getting someone who seemed to really enjoy playing for us and in front of us, a player who needs to prove himself, a player who has that raw ability, he can be a target man but also a silky finisher. This boy can play, there is no doubt, but time is required. Maybe a solid summer of training would significantly help, but it looks like this guy is not going to get the nod, which is a mistake in my opinion.
I would be willing to take this risk but only if we could get him as a cheap buy and we bring in other strikers too. Get the circus which is the Bafe Gomis deal done, go in hard for Pierre-Michel Lasogga and then bring in some solid/attacking midfielders (Rodwell, Nathan Redmond, Ayew, Cabella, Grenier, keep HBA…. I could go on).
Do this and our front 6 next season will have so much more of a fear factor, which is what we need, to provoke a sense of fear in the opposition, not laughter.
Also, if we were to sign Luuk, maybe he could come as a double act with his brother. Siem De Jong would be one hell of a coup for Newcastle. He could be the Cabaye replacement we are dreaming of, and maybe, Luuk could just be something special too…
