Newcastle Open Talks With Joint Top World Cup Scorer – Reports

On Thursday we brought you news that in South America it had been reported that [intlink id=”44070″ type=”post”]Newcastle were interested in signing Enner Valencia[/intlink], and indeed, were ‘favourites’ to land the striker.

Now there are widespread reports claiming that Newcastle have started talks with a view to signing the Ecuador striker, with Valencia adding another two goals against Honduras last night, hopefully not derailing any potential move. In the opening match Valencia scored Ecuador’s consolation goal in the 2-1 defeat by Switzerland.

Those latest goals have moved Enner Valencia to joint top scorer at this tournament so far, alongside Van Persie, Mueller, Robben and Benzema, all on three goals.

Valencia only moved from his native league to the higher rated Mexican league at the beginning of this year but has already scored 18 goals in 23 league appearances, since that Emelec to Pachuca transfer.

The 24 year old striker has now scored 7 times in 12 appearances since stepping up to the Ecuador senior team, including three in two games at this tournament.

In the reports it is also claimed that Newcastle had representatives at last night’s Honduras/Ecuador clash and that Valencia’s value going into the World Cup was around the £7m mark.

If Newcastle are looking to carry this transfer through then let’s hope they move quickly before competitors step in and/or before he scores any more goals.

Watch all 18 club goals below that Valencia has scored since January.
