Newcastle Marseille Target Dimitri Payet Says He’s Staying

Despite his club making clear he is available for transfer, reported Newcastle target Dimitri Payet has now insisted that he is staying at Marseille.

The French international was speaking on a holiday visit back home to the island of Reunion and when asked about transfer speculation regarding a move to Newcastle United or elsewhere, Payet said instead that he was looking forward to recreating what he watches at the World Cup in training, as well as stating that he would still be at Marseille for the new season.

Payet;

“I came here to enjoy family, friends and the sun, even if for the moment there isn’t too much.

“For sure I will be at Marseille next year.”

The two footed winger has an impressive goals tally of 39 in the last four league seasons and was signed by Lille in the same summer that Cabaye left for Newcastle in.

Some of the coverage over in France suggests that Payet may be a back-up in case Newcastle don’t get Remy Cabella ‘over the line’. The positive is that both deliver goals, but whether either, or both, can make the step up to the more competitive Premier League is another matter.

Having played for three different clubs in four seasons, my betting is that it looks like it is very much on the cards that he’ll make it four in five next season. Though whether that is at Newcastle remains to be seen.

Thanks as always to our top translator Pierre for keeping an eye on Newcastle news in France.
