Newcastle Friends Reunited At St Andrews
Former Newcastle players Lee Clark and Alan Thompson have been reunited at St Andrews.
Birmingham manager Lee Clark has now given Thompson the job of coaching the Under 21s.
“Delighted to have Alan on board, a very difficult decision with outstanding candidates.
His passion and desire stood out, also his knowledge of working at a club like Celtic where there are huge expectations.
He has experience at all levels of coaching in senior football.”
The two were part of ‘Ossie’s Babes’, a group of young players given their chance under Ossie Ardiles when Newcastle United was on its knees.
Despite the kids showing plenty of promise, the team were fading fast until Kevin Keegan’s intervention when Ossie was given his marching orders.
Clarkie went on to play a key part in the Keegan revival and was one of those who came so close to lifting the title in 1996. On the other hand, Thompson left to find his fame and fortune with Celtic, Villa and Bolton, and I was surprised to discover he only made sixteen appearances in total for Newcastle.
In 2008 Kevin Keegan appointed Thompson to the post of Academy Coach at Newcastle, he then became reserve team coach for the 2009/10 season.
In June 2010 Alan Thompson left to join Celtic where Neil Lennon appointed him first team coach, that job lasting until Thompson was fired two years ago.
