Newcastle End Interest In Manchester City Defender

Newcastle United have decided against pursuing Manchester City’s Joleon Lescott.

The defender will be without a club this summer after City decided not to offer him a new deal.

Having started only eight Premier League matches all last season, the writing was on the wall for the central defender.

Newcastle were reported to have shown interest in a short-term deal but with the likes of QPR, West Ham and Villa also interested, any kind of bargain deal was looking increasingly unlikely.

Lescott turns 32 on the opening day of the new season and has not been selected for the World Cup as Roy Hodgson has instead chosen younger players such as Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.

Short-term big wage deals for players was something that looked unlikely to happen under Ashley but as the Remy loan arrangement shows, the Newcastle United owner will change his mind instantly if he sees a better way of keeping United in the Premier League without longer term financial commitment.

Whether Lescott would have improved the Newcastle defence is another question but after some of last season’s shambolic displays that wouldn’t be difficult.
