Disaster For Newcastle United Next Season If Half Team Looks Like This

Newcastle United next season could, or should I say ‘will’, be looking at disaster if there is not a major injection of quality.

Last season United just about got away with it despite half the team been very much of the ‘tries their best’ level.

Players I would put in this category are the likes of Mike Williamson, Yoan Gouffran, Paul Dummett, Vurnon Anita, Steven Taylor, Shola and so on.

I haven’t included the total no-hopers such as Luuk De Jong, Dan Gosling and others who got games last season.

Even clubs that win the Premier League aren’t full of top quality/skill, and have a few workers in amongst the stars, however you have to have the balance on the right side of the line.

In say Manchester City’s case, at their level the likes of James Milner and one or two others are their workers, who play a supporting role to the likes of Silva, Aguero, Toure and the rest.

In Newcastle’s case, I would say that clearly last season, our three most talented players were Remy, Cabaye and Ben Arfa, none of who will be playing for United next season.

At the level we find ourselves at under Mike Ashley, last season showed just how dramatically the team/squad could collapse when those three weren’t playing – relegation form after Christmas told us everything we needed to know.

My big worry is that if once again we find half (or more) of the NUFC team next season is made up of players of Dummett, Williamson and Anita’s level, we are going to be in for a shocker of a season.

I find it impossible to hope that Newcastle will manage, or even aim, to bring in players of Cabaye and Remy’s calibre to paper over the cracks of the (lack of) quality in the Newcastle team, in the way that those two did.

I haven’t even mentioned the fact that two of our best players, Krul and Coloccini, were way below their standard as well last season, something that most of us were happy to not think about too much – with other more pressing things to worry about.

The only way for Newcastle fans to approach the season with any confidence is if there is a raising of the quality of team in general, rather than relying on 2 or 3 players to save the season.

I think at least four or five first team players of the level of Tiote, Sissoko, Debuchy level need to be brought in, players that are a cut above Anita, Gouffran and others, though maybe not at the level of Cabaye and Ben Arfa (on a good day).

We’re now into June and the clock continues to tick – only 76 days to go until the new season…
