The first goal for the African qualifiers began with Cheick Tiote winning back possession, the comeback goal eventually supplied by Wilfried Bony in the 64th minute.

Columbia had earlier made sure they topped the group with a three goal win over Greece, the path now open for both Tiote’s Ivory Coast and Columbia to qualify – the two teams meeting on Thursday.

Previous Newcastle interest had centred on Tim Krul watching on as Holland shocked Spain with a  5-1.

While on Friday night it was one time Newcastle striker James Troisi who got the last 12 minutes during Australia’s defeat to Chile. Troisi’s contribution to the NUFC first team was sitting on the bench once against Bolton in 2008.
