Cheick Tiote Gets Newcastle’s World Cup Party Started
Cheick Tiote at last got Newcastle United’s World Cup party on the road in the early hors of Sunday morning – UK time.
Despite dominating possession, the Ivory Coast had gone into the break a goal down, with Keisuke Honda supplying the finish for Japan.
The first goal for the African qualifiers began with Cheick Tiote winning back possession, the comeback goal eventually supplied by Wilfried Bony in the 64th minute.
Only two minutes later it was Gervinho’s turn to shine and he knocked in the winner to send the Ivory Coast on their way to three points.
Cheick Tiote played the full match and was his usual all action self in the middle of the pitch.
Columbia had earlier made sure they topped the group with a three goal win over Greece, the path now open for both Tiote’s Ivory Coast and Columbia to qualify – the two teams meeting on Thursday.
Previous Newcastle interest had centred on Tim Krul watching on as Holland shocked Spain with a 5-1.
While on Friday night it was one time Newcastle striker James Troisi who got the last 12 minutes during Australia’s defeat to Chile. Troisi’s contribution to the NUFC first team was sitting on the bench once against Bolton in 2008.
