Tiote Cheicks Out Thanks To Fatal Mistake and Dodgy Penalty – Video
The World Cup dream is over for Newcastle United’s Cheick Tiote, possibly forever.
The Ivory Coast midfielder will be 32 by the time of the next World Cup in Russia, and the heartbreaking injury time defeat to Greece, could prove to be his last ever piece of World Cup finals action.
Just before half-time it was a terrible backpass by Tiote (see footage below) that set up Greece to take the lead through Samaris, the United midfielder leaving his central defender short with a shocker of a pass.
Cheick then had the added insult of being hauled off after an hour, but his replacement Wilfried Bony equalised and looked to have rescued things for Ivory Coast, who only needed a draw to qualify.
However, injury time saw a well dodgy penalty awarded (again watch below) and Samaras stepped up to take Greece through and send Tiote and his teammates home.
This meant two countries qualified for the knockout stage on Tuesday based on big errors by the officials, the referee in the earlier match failing to spot [intlink id=”44187″ type=”post”]Luis Suarez’ latest horrific bite attack.[/intlink]
