Is Activating £8m Release Clause A Smart Move For Newcastle?

Newcastle are one of the clubs reported to be interested in Steve Caulker but is he the right player for United?

The ex-Tottenham centre-back has an £8m relegation release clause in his contract, the same amount that Spurs received for his services only 12 months ago.

Whether the defender’s value should have gone up or down in that time is open to question.

Many pundits claim that Caulker had a decent season on a personal level despite Cardiff’s demise, however it is hard to look away from the 74 goals the Welsh club conceded, 15 more than Newcastle and the second worst record after Fulham in the Premier League.

Newcastle still lack the dominant centre-back who can also score goals that Alan Pardew outlined as essential two years ago, with five goals last campaign it would appear that Steve Caulker ticks at least one of those boxes.

For me it is vital that United improve the quality at the heart of the defence, and trading in Steven Taylor or Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa to generate half the £8m for Caulker, would prove good business in my book.
