Williamson Or Coloccini?

After Monday night’s defeat at the Emirates, there was criticism of the centre of Newcastle United’s defence, but was it Williamson or Coloccini most to blame?

Pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher pointed to a lack of communication been the biggest problem, which surely should see the main focus falling on Colo as our captain.

However, it is Mike Williamson who Alan Pardew has had to come out and defend and justify his place in the team for today’s match with Cardiff.

“There are options but I think Willo had a great run of form and I think we’ll need him on Saturday.

“He will play – I have spoken to him and I expect him to play a lot better on Saturday, I think he will respond to that.”

I have been a big fan of Coloccini over the years but I have to say that he has been very lucky to keep his place when fit, as his performances have been way below what we expect.

After being so good over the years, it pains me to say that at times he has been a liability in this campaign, especially in recent weeks/months.

Williamson has massive limitations but at least you know where you are with him, sadly in Coloccini’s case I have even heard fans wondering recently if the Argentinian is even putting 100% effort in?

If I was forced to leave one of the two of them out, then I’m afraid at the minute it would be Coloccini every time.

With a statistic of only 3 clean sheets in our last 20 matches (conceding 37 in the process), it would take a very brave man (or woman) to predict a clean sheet (21/10 at the bookies) today, no matter who Alan Pardew picks.
