Match Preview Newcastle v Cardiff
Saturday 3 May 3pm

It is apt that we round off the home fixtures with a game that sees the worst team in the league facing the one with the worst recent form.

Literally anything could happen today, though it is unlikely to be pretty.

A set of players with everything to play for, against a home side who have faced accusations for some weeks, or even months, that their bags are already packed for their summer jollies.

Cardiff have taken only 5 points from the last 18 but that pales alongside Newcastle United’s all out zero points.

United have managed just 1 solitary goal in those 6 matches, while our visitors have scored 8. Maybe the biggest hope for entertainment today is that between the two clubs in those half dozen matches, they have conceded an unbelievable 34 goals, 17 each.

Cardiff must play with enterprise so there must surely be every chance of an open match despite the usual regular Pardew negative tactics. With the likes of Remy, Sissoko and Gouffran let’s hope Newcastle can give some belated entertainment to the fans who have forgotten what value for money looked like.

It does seem quite unbelievable that Newcastle have only scored three Premier League goals at St.James’ Park since Boxing Day, nine matches and over four months of fans sinking ever further into their seats as the life and any remaining atmosphere has all but been sucked out of the supporters.

Without an outstanding goalscorer, it is maybe no surprise that Cardiff have struggled, the signing of Danish forward Andreas Cornelius last summer was a major flop and currently Campbell (9) and Mutch (7) lead the goalscoring charts.

A reminder of another of United’s weaknesses though, are shown by central defender Caulker showing up with five goals. A suggestion that set-pieces at both ends will be yet another worry today as Arsenal proved on Monday night.

Many people see the lame Cup defeat to Cardiff as helping to set Newcastle on the slippery path they’ve trodden ever since, with only rare moments of relief. That cup defeat was a pivotal moment with final confirmation of Newcastle’s policy of not competing, as Cabaye and Remy didn’t start, and our season once again ended as the Christmas tree was coming down.

Fans will look on with interest to see just how much desire players show today, the likes of Debuchy, Tiote and one or two others can always be counted on but many of our other automatic first team regulars will be under scrutiny.

It has been an even stranger build up to a match than usual, with the usual nonsense from Pardew and his players, added to by the planned second-half walkout by fans.

My ideal scenario is that the players race to a five goal lead by the hour mark and then whether you leave on 60 or 69 minutes, or whenever, you will have had a small return on your money in recent months.

The fans deserve better and indeed the players deserve better, the only difference being that they earn fortunes to suffer and of course have the option of jumping ship.

We can’t do that but sadly many fans will be leaving St.James’ Park and not returning until significant changes happen in the running of the football club.

Mike Ashley has a lot to answer for but ironically he is one person who almost certainly won’t have to choose whether to leave on 60 or 69 minutes, as he will be nowhere near the scene of his crime.
