Newcastle Win Opening Hong Kong Sevens Match

Newcastle United, who won the competition in 2012, have kicked off this year’s Soccer Sevens in Hong Kong with a win over hosts Hong Kong Football Club.

In the first half of their match, Gilliead and Aarons went close to opening the scoring but the two sides went in level at the break.

The second half though saw United run out two goal winners, with the two same players who almost scored in the opening period, grabbing a goal each to get the United kids off to a great start.

Peter Beardsley’s young NUFC team will also face HKFA U-23 and Asian Champions Guangzhou Evergrande in Group A.

There are four groups in all with Sunderland placed in Group B.

Maybe as much interest will be centred on the Masters competition where a Wallsend Boys Club team will feature Peter Beardsley in a twelve team competition.

Wallsend will compete in their group with Hong Kong based teams Kowloon Cricket Club & USRC, plus a Rangers Legends team.
