Newcastle Signing Joe Kinnear Messed Up Is Now Back On
It is widely reported this morning that Newcastle United are back in for Darren Bent.
With Luuk De Jong said not to be signing for United, due to the potential fee rather than him being hopeless apparently, it is claimed that Newcastle have switched attention back to a player who Alan Pardew has previously said he’d like to sign.
With only a couple of weeks to go until the start of the new season, it looked as though Newcastle were due to bring in the first signing, though fans were a ‘bot’ underwhelmed. There had been days of speculation that a meeting with Darren Bent and his agent had been arranged for Joe Kinnear to conclude a deal and then this happened, as we reported at the time last August;
‘Reports coming out of the Darren Bent camp say that a meeting with Joe Kinnear has ended in farce.
With Fulham having already made a number of bids for the Villa striker with a top bid of at least £4m widely reported, in the meeting with Kinnear it was made clear to Bent and his agent that Newcastle weren’t prepared to go beyond £2m.
The report in The Telegraph also said that while Fulham weren’t prepared to match Bent’s £65,000 a week Villa wages, they were willing to go a decent way towards that figure, on the other hand Kinnear made clear Newcastle wouldn’t pay anything near what Fulham were offering.’
Moving forward to the present day, Darren Bent’s one year loan spell at Fulham hasn’t been the greatest success – the Cottagers relegated and Bent scoring 6 goals in 30 appearances. While half of those appearances were as a sub, only 3 of the goals came in the Premier League in the 24 times he got on the pitch, Bent scoring 3 in 6 Cup matches.
Bent is now back at Villa who are desperate to get rid of his £60,000 a week wages.
With Newcastle allegedly looking to buy British then sadly I see this potential signing as a real possibility, the 30 year old goal poacher eventually ending up at St.James’ Park.
Taking a positive, I suppose at least you can say Luuk De Jong and Shola make Bent look lethal in front of goal!
God help us though is Ashley and Pardew think somebody like Darren Bent is the answer to Newcastle’s first choice striker problems next season.
