Newcastle Linked With Nampalys Mendy Transfer
The transfer story mill grinds on and the player Newcastle are being linked with in France today is Nampalys Mendy.
The 21 year old defensive midfielder was first choice for Nice last season and helped his club to stay in Ligue 1 by the smallest of margins, finishing fourth bottom.
However, worried about the number of matches he would get with Monaco spending their owners’ cash injection, Mendy decided to move to near neighbours Nice.
France Football have stated that their understanding is that Newcastle are one of a number of Premier League teams considering a move for Mendy this summer.
Having never scored at senior level, it is unlikely Mendy could help Newcastle in that department, however, he can take some pride in the part he played in helping Nice to survive this past season.
Nice scored a ridiculously low 30 goals in their 38 matches, by far the lowest in Ligue 1. However, they only conceded 44 goals which was the key factor in them surviving, with Mendy central to that as he protected his back four – the three relegated clubs below them conceding 61, 65 and 72 respectively.
If Newcastle follow up their interest in Nampalys Mendy, it will be interesting to see how the French Under 21 international views a potential move to Newcastle United. Considering what a disaster it has proved so far for the talented Massadio Haidara, inexplicably ignored throughout the season by Alan Pardew.
