Newcastle Line Up Out Of Contract Midfielder As Cabaye Replacement
It is widely reported this morning that out of contract midfielder, Steve Sidwell, is being targeted by Newcastle United as well as other Premier League clubs.
While Sidwell will turn 32 in December, Mike Ashley has now proved that any ‘plan’ doesn’t really exist when it comes to recruiting players, with the big wages short-term use of Loic Remy when there was clearly no intention of committing to a big fee and massive wages on a longer term basis.
Therefore offering somebody like Sidwell a one or two year contract on big wages could well appeal, with no transfer fee to pay.
There is little doubt Sidwell will have been on big money, having joined Chelsea after seeing his contract out at Reading he will have been on Chelski style wages.
It is hard to imagine that he then took any drop in pay with subsequent moves to Villa and then Fulham.
Pardew was the manager who took Steve Sidwell to Reading from Arsenal and when the player signed for Fulham, shortly after Pardew arrived at St.James’ Park, he had this to say about him;
“I would’ve looked to bring Steve here as he was absolutely brilliant for me at Reading – Fulham were fortunate to get a fantastic bargain.”
West Ham, Crystal Palace and Stoke are also credited with an interest and despite Fulham’s relegation, the fact that SIdwell scored seven goals from midfield for such a poor team will not have been missed by Premier League managers desperate to add goals and creativity…
With Sidwell likely to go wherever the wages are highest, will Newcastle be able to compete?
