New Zealand Expecting Invasion Of 2,000 Newcastle Fans From Australia

Premier League fever has gripped New Zealand ahead of the visit of Newcastle and West Ham this summer, with reports of 2,000 Newcastle fans based in Australia making the trip.

Wellington Phoneix host a double header (West Ham v Sydney FC followed by Newcastle United v Wellington Phoenix) on July 26 and they have sold 13,000 tickets on the first day of sales.

They also report that 6,000 tickets have been sold for the other two matchdays in Auckland and Dunedin (Newcastle v Sydney – July 22).

Phoenix General Manager, David Dome, believes the 34,500 Wellington home ground will sell out, with big interest from locals to see the English clubs.

However, it is the claim David Dome makes about Newcastle fans based in Australia that caught the eye;

“Anecdotally we’ve been told of 2,000 from the Australian Newcastle supporters group making the trip to support their team – while similar numbers, if not more, are expected from Australian based West Ham supporters groups.”

I don’t know exactly how many fans Newcastle fans there are in Australia but I would have thought it was ‘slightly’ optimistic to be talking of two thousand or more crossing over from Australia to New Zealand..even if there are thousands of Geordies there, .it isn’t exactly like hopping on the metro from Newcastle to Gateshead.

Any Newcastle fans in Australia and New Zealand like to give us a better idea of what we can expect?
