Does Losing Yohan Cabaye Really Turn Newcastle Into Relegation Certainties?

There has been a lot of comment on The Mag about ‘wholesale changes’ being needed to the playing squad to prevent relegation; and whilst I agree we need some fresh blood, I don’t think we need a new team.

Firstly, this is essentially the same squad that got us safe in the first half of the season, the only difference being Cabaye – admittedly a major difference but a single player none the less.  If it were possible to wave a magic wand and get him back, we wouldn’t be looking at relegation, so the basis of a decent team should be there.

In fact, I suggest there is the basis of two teams – although the second 11 has a very young look to it, we would get to see if loaning the kids out has been worth it.

Team A – Krul; Debuchy; Colocini; Williamson; Santon; Sissoko; Anita; Tiote; Gouffran; Cisse; AN Other

Team B – Elliot; Tavernier; Taylor; Mbiwa; Haidara; Abeid; Gosling; Bigirimana; Sammy; Armstrong; Cambell

In Reserve – Alnwick; R.Taylor; Vuckic; Good; Dummett; Streete

I’ve assumed that Remy and De Jong have not signed permanent deals and the following players have left:

Ben Arfa; Amalfitano; Marveaux; Shola; Obertan; Newton; Ferguson; Richardson; Gutierrez

Obviously the above would not be expected to threaten the top of the table and that is what we are all looking for; but they should be good enough for a solid mid-table standing.  I would suggest a creative midfielder with some pace to replace Anita in Team A, along with two strikers, could change that.

In an effort to address inevitable comments about players leaving, NUFC have previously said they will replace those first teamers who leave (although we’ve yet to see it); so here is my suggested shopping list of replacements.

All have premier league experience (bar one) and may be gettable (if we can convince them to come).

•             GK – Marshall (Cardiff); Forster (Celtic)

•             Def – Caulker (Cardiff), Tompkins (Wham), Lescott (ManC)

•             Mid – Holtby (Spurs); Dejahgah (Fulham); Shelvey (Swansea)

•             Att – Bony (Swansea); Hernandez (ManU)

•             And if we do decide to change manager, what about Rosler (Wigan)???
