Columbian International To Follow In Tino Asprilla’s Footsteps At Newcastle?
The latest (until the next 25 later today) player to be linked with a move to Newcastle, is striker/winger Victor Ibarbo, a compatriot of Tino Asprilla.
The Columbian international is 24 year old and currently plays for Serie A club Cagliari, where he has 12 months of his contract left.
With no sign of him signing a new contract, the Italian side are said to be keen to cash in now, though they hope that if Ibarbo can make an impression at this summer’s World Cup (named in provision squad – final 23 man squad named Sunday 1 June), his price will rise.
Ibarbo’s big claim to fame is that in 2013 he scored the first hat-trick in Serie A by a Columbian, since a certain Tino Asprilla in 1993.
However, I take it (hope) Ibarbo plays more as a winger than a striker, as he has scored only 13 goals (4 in season just ended) in 102 Serie A appearances for Cagliari.
While some reports claim Barcelona and Juventus are interested in the Columbian, that would appear a little ambitious as his agent/club attempts to drive up his value.
With only 20 of last season’s appearances for Cagliari in the starting line up and his team finishing sixth bottom, he definitely looks like a player who will be moving on, but NOT to the likes of Barca or the Italian Champions.
Though Newcastle? Well 12 months on contract, club keen to sell, deal to be done…he does fit the profile.
