What Bonus For Newcastle Fans Next Season?

A lot was been made by the club about the stated target for the past season of 10th place, but it does beg the question, what is next?

The club constantly state that in each season they should be ‘progressing’ so what would be the target next season. Maybe 8th, 6th or just as high as possible as long as we avoid Europe? Clearly there is no incentive for a cup run either, maybe even a sneaky one to get embarrassed in the first 2 rounds.

I ask the question because the stated target is very important to the Newcastle United under Ashley. The way he operates in business is low basic salaries but high incentives/bonuses. Fail and the pay is rubbish (relatively for a Premiership footballer admittedly but not so for someone working the Sports Direct tills).

We are told everyone is involved from the office staff to the ‘board’ (including Mike himself?), so the whole club is intended to pull in the same direction. It certainly looks that way this past year – 10th or bust, so everyone internally in the club is happy,  yet,  if Pardew had slipped to 11th, he could have been in big trouble.

Let’s say that the target next season is a mind boggling 8th (that’ll bring the punters flocking back eh Mike?). In practical terms that will mean getting above Southampton and Stoke, plus not letting anyone below get above us, because as sure as hell we are not going to get above anyone else. Certainly the Southampton players are streets ahead of us at the present time, and even if some of their crown jewels are sold, then they have enough coming through to comfortably remain above us.

Office staff, players and surely the coaching staff, must be able to see that 8th is just too far beyond them, and signing 2 players is not going to make much difference (I personally go for 5, and only that if Mr Carr is finding gems such as Cabayes, Remys and Tiotes, as opposed to average players like Gouffran, Anita and Mbiwa).

It is crushingly obvious to all within the club, that the targets and therefore their salaries are in for a right pasting next year, hardly something that is going to inspire an already lacklustre set of players, and certainly not for anyone looking to join. A new player looks over the sea and what does he see; a low salary with little chance of getting close to the ’target’ , sorry monsieur I will go where they pay me.

At least it will mean that Ashley does not get his bonus….silly me of course he does, via all the free advertising and direct revenue he shafts the club for!
