Bafetimbi Gomis Flies Into London Today
Long-term Newcastle ‘target’ Bafetimbi Gomis is reported to be flying into London today, the striker is due to meet interested clubs as he has now played his last game for Lyon and is available on a free.
West Ham, Swansea and Sunderland have all been named as retaining an interest, though Newacstle appear to have slipped out of sight…
“Bafetimbi is one of the best free agents in Europe at the moment. He’s quick, strong and most important scores goals…will somebody start the bidding at eighty grand a week.”
(That last bit McKay may not have actually said (publicly), though that is basically what the reality will be)
The French international isn’t a prolific goalscorer, with 64 goals in 178 Ligue 1 appearances for Lyon, but in his five seasons at his current club he has never failed to get into double figures.
That consistency plus all round game, including been able to play as a target man, will no doubt see him been able to drive up his wage demands with plenty of clubs interested.
If Newcastle United were ever interested, it looks as though that chance may well be long gone. Even on a free, the idea of Mike Ashley agreeing to a long-term big bucks contract looks all but impossible.
The question therefore continues to be, where will Newcastle buy in some goals from this summer?
Part of the answer sadly is that once other clubs are also showing an interest, you just can’t see Newcastle winning, or even being prepared to try to win, any auction.
