Austrian Press Report Newcastle Move For Marko Arnautovic

The media in Austria are reporting that Newcastle United are ready to bid for winger Marko Arnautovic.

The winger has proven a big hit with Stoke fans after the club picked him up for a bargain £2m last summer after three seasons at Werder Bremen.

The Austrian international had shown enough promise as a youngster for the Bundesliga club to pay FC Twente £5m in 2010, after Arnautovic had completed a very brief loan spell at Inter Milan.

With four goals and a number of assists from the wing, 25 year old Arnautovic has ironically helped Stoke leapfrog Newcastle on the last day of the season and deprive Mike Ashley of £1.2m in TV prize money.

The Austrian media are quoting a price of around £12m, with Spurs also said to be interested.

It would be hard to see Mike Ashley paying anywhere near that for a player who cost a fraction of that fee 12 months earlier.

However, that is surely the conundrum, if Newcastle do indeed want to sign British players, or at least foreign players with a track record already in the Premier League, then they aren’t going to come cheap. Particularly those who can score and create goals.

From a personal point of view, I thought in the match at the Britannia, Arnautovic looked the best and most dangerous player on the pitch.

As ever, we wait and see.
