The Stats That Tell Us Where Newcastle United Really Are
A ‘top ten finish’ put in perspective, as the stats tell us where Newcastle United really are.
With three games left to play there is every chance that Stoke and Palace will leapfrog Newcastle leaving us in the bottom half of the table at the end of the season.
Some will say “serves them right for setting a target to finish in the top half”.
Having seemed safe in achieving that target early, this has caused the biggest switch-off imaginable. But what does it mean to finish in the top half anyway?

We may be mid table, but in reality we are miles from the top and only a few goals ahead of relegation.
We have scored 20 goals in 18 home games and 5 of those were against Stoke who were playing with 9 men.
Our goal difference is minus 15. Only the bottom 4 teams in the league have a worse goal difference.
We know the strikers have not been scoring, but have the midfield been creating enough chances?

However, what really drives us mad, more than anything else, is the following:
Top Six Average Attendances:
Man Utd 75,000
Man City 47,000
If I had made that the top seven attendances, the bottom of the league team would have been next. Just another wee club from the North East.
