After seeing Rolando Aarons become the latest young player to get his first professional contract at Newcastle United, Peter Beardsley was keen to talk about United’s younger players.

Beardsley claims that what owner Mike Ashley is doing at youth level is ‘incredible‘ and that ‘Long term, it will be brilliant’.

Football Development Manager Peter Beardsley;

“Rolando’s had a brilliant month.

“He’s always had ability but he’s shown great character in the last month and we’re delighted that he’s agreed to sign this contract.

“He has a lot of talent and now he’s adding the work rate to it. He has a bright future and it’s good news for us going forward.

“The owner is all for youngsters doing well and what he’s doing at this football club at youth level is incredible, I genuinely mean that. Long term, it will be brilliant.”

As a long-term defender of his boss Mike Ashley, many fans will hope that what Beardsley says comes true and we do have great things ahead in terms of youth, but will treat the comments with reserve until we see the evidence on the pitch.

Especially when it took Newcastle two years longer than the likes of Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Wolves and Blackburn to get Category One status for their Academy, having failed first time when assessed.
