Newcastle United and Liverpool – What Might Have Been…

Two seasons ago we finished 5th and were 13 points above Liverpool. They had paid a record fee for our main striker, Andy Carroll, the season before.

Dalglish left and Brendan Rodgers came in. Rodgers knew what he wanted to do and what style of football he wanted to play. The board backed him.

He’s brought the likes of Sturridge, Coutinho, Mignolet and Sakho in, kept faith with Henderson, Gerrard & Skrtel and managed to hold onto and get the best out of Suarez, whilst bringing the likes of Sterling through the ranks.

They play quick passing attractive football, with players working in little triangles and racing up to support attack and running back to support the defence, using width with attacking full backs. Henderson doing the unattractive holding role with Gerrard being allowed to dictate the game.

They are a joy to watch and deserve to win the league this year.

I don’t think Rodgers is a genius or anything, but he is single minded, plays to strengths and has brought in the players to supplement what he already had and create a great side who work together as a team. It’s that simple!

We on the other hand, had more potential and promise, but have thrown it all away, because of an owner who refused to back his manager and a manager who is now left grasping at straws as to what he does, with no strengths left to play to.

We are a total shambles with no soul and a laughing stock, once again!
