Newcastle United Linked With Oscar Cardozo
Newcastle United have once again been linked with Paraguayan striker, Oscar Cardozo.
The Benfica forward was linked with United last summer, along with a multitude of other players, but nothing happened – with Cardozo or indeed any other permanent deal.
The striker scored a penalty against Newcastle in Benfica’s 3-1 win in the first leg of last season’s Europa League quarter final, then came on as a late substitute in the 1-1 second leg draw at St.James’ Park.
It was thought Cardozo was nailed on to leave last summer after he ended up pushing his manager after the striker had been substituted in the Portuguese Cup Final, Benfica at the time leading but then eventually losing 2-1.
After being frozen out at the start of the season due to the conflict with his manager, Cardozo has however recently been back in favour and scoring goals.
This season though may indeed be his last at Benfica with his agent recently quoted as saying;
“I think in June that it will be a good time for a transfer, if possible.”
There is no doubting Cardozo’s goalscoring pedigree but one small sticking point could well be the fact that the forward turns 31 next month. As part of the [intlink id=”41510″ type=”post”]statement announcing Lee Charnley and Mike Ashley\’s new roles[/intlink] yesterday, the club reaffirmed their policy of looking to sign (if anybody…) younger players who can grow in value.
Also with the striker looking for a final payday elsewhere, Newcastle would be very unlikely to compete with the other clubs who are sure to be interested.
