Newcastle Linked With Ajax Midfielder

It is reported today today that Newcastle United have been tracking Siem De Jong of Ajax, brother of current loan ‘striker’ Luuk.

It is claimed that he has been watched as a potential replacement for Yohan Cabaye, since the Frenchman left in January.

The Dutch midfielder has scored a bucketful of goals from midfield for Ajax but suffered with injuries this season.

An ongoing hamstring problem has curbed Siem De Jong’s appearances but he has still scored 7 goals in 18 league games (16 starts).

Since establishing himself in the Ajax team, De Jong has never failed to fire less than double figures, in terms of league goals, each season.

However, you come back to the same old conundrum of whether players in weaker leagues can transfer that form to the likes of the Premier League (see brother Luuk…).

Going against him is the fact that he hasn’t really transferred his goalscoring form to European matches, registering 6 goals in 44 games, in the Champions/Europa League.

Also, Siem De Jong is now 25 and managed only 4 minutes of competitive action for the Dutch national team.

The midfielder is said to be potentially available this summer for around £10m-£12m and indeed the time may have come where it makes sense fro both club and player, financially & playing wise, for them to part company.

Whether he could fill Cabaye’s shoes is another matter, as of course is the likelihood of Mike Ashley agreeing to such a deal where he’s unlikely to be getting a bargain for a player who is well known to any potential buying clubs and scouts.
