Is Mr 90% The Right Man For Newcastle United?

8 years ago

Following recent comments by the Montpellier owner, Louis Nicollin, where he stated that he expected Remy Cabella to leave the club this summer, the player himself has confirmed this as a certainty, or at least as a 90% probability.

Speaking to La Provence, Cabella had this to say about his future;

“I now know 90% that this is my last season at Montpellier.

“If a club makes an offer that interests me, Montpellier will let me go.

“From time to time I ask myself, is it a good time now to go abroad to explore something else, or is it better to stay in France?”

The French club’s playmaker said in January that he had to stay until the summer to help in their relegation fight and almost single-handedly, Cabella has dragged Montpellier to almost certain safety with a nine point gap opened up to the relegation zone.

If Newcastle really did try to sign Cabella in January and are still seriously interested, then the question really has to be whether a player on the up like the playmaker is, sees United as an attractive proposition if he decides abroad is the right route.

In January you could have sold Newcastle as a club that was on the up again but what can you sell to the player now?

Other interested clubs are going to offer at least the same wages as Newcastle, so what else is there?

The ability to settle quickly with a number of French players already at St.James’ Park, could still be a positive, but not quite as attractive when most of the better ones appear to be trying to get away or have ‘issues’.

Cabaye gone, no chance of Remy staying, Debuchy rumoured to be wanting out, Mapou and Ben Arfa struggling to get a game, while Sissoko never seems to know where he is supposed to be playing from week to week.

Is this an attractive proposition for Remy Cabella, or indeed any player who will be able to pick and choose his next club this summer?
