Over in Lancashire, a story has just broken that could see Mike Ashley get involved in yet another football club, helping further to exploit the dominant position he has by his involvement as easily the leading sports retailer and the shareholding/connection he has with actual clubs.

While Ashley obviously owns Newcastle United lock, stock and barrel, up at Rangers he has a minority shareholding and controls their merchandising operation.

A third club now appears to be on the cards with the Manchester Evening News M.E.N) reporting that they have information which says Oldham Athletic are on the brink of signing a deal with Ashley, via Sports Direct.

The report says that a five year agreement is proposed which would see Sports Direct take over the running of the club shop, Sondico (an Ashley brand – check out the SJP advertising at the next match) would be the shirt sponsor and the stadium is to be given the Sports Direct branding.

The deal is said to be worth over £1m but no official announcement can be made until after the end of May  when the current deal with Ashley’s rivals, JD Sports

The M.E.N also report that as part of the deal, it is likely that Newcastle will play a pre-season friendly at Oldham and that a relationship is on the cards, whereby some of Newcastle’s younger players could head there on loan to gain experience.
