After the debacle of the last few weeks, where a season which threatened a modicum of success gradually diminished as the wheels fell off, I thought about offering some ‘ f*** them all’ thoughts.
However, this week I have been working in the South West, where football has less passionl, and the towns and cities are littered with kids sporting the latest in fashionable kits; Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool & Arsenal being the main ones, curiously Man City have not yet caught on.
There were a few watching the game, but most had little interest, however my muffled singular celebrations and aforementioned shirt did attract a bit of attention.
I was in fact asked about my and our fans’ hatred for Sunderland, I explained it was simply amusing banter and the feeling was both ways.
One guy then reminded me of the 90s when we were everyone’s second favourite team, aptly named ‘the entertainers’ , my mind drifted back to the three or four seasons when we really did compete, a Mag article from that time sprang to mind where a writer quoted words along the lines of ‘ sunderland, rivals? We don’t play in their playground anymore, Man Utd are our playtime rivals now’.
I was then asked how a club with such huge support has drifted back into the wilderness, for once I was lost for words.
KK & SBR both built platforms and springboards where success would surely follow…….how has it not?
Mike Ashley is possibly the most successful businessman in the UK, yet he does nothing here except use our club to advertise his main business.
I note he has been at the last three or four games, I also know that at the Everton home game he was spontaneously charitable with a couple of young fans who had managed to get within close proximity, a nice touch by such a ruthless man…..maybe he is human?
I also know the Mike Ashley helicopter has been in and out of Darsley Park (training ground) a couple of times over the last few days, could it be that he is finally going to do something positive……or is he frightened at the alarming possibility of a mass exodus from the stands!
Whatever is in his head my ‘glass half full’ head suddenly has a hope that things might be about to happen…ok let me dream a bit longer!
Man Utd come to town on Saturday and for once we are nearly playing in the same playground again…….if we are in the same playground again next season you can be sure of one of two things…….astonishing things have happened and we are competing again, or David Moyes is on the dole.
Which will it be?
