Jonjo Shelvey Named On Alan Pardew’s Shopping List
Another weekend goes by and yet more additions to the list of players said to be interesting Newcastle United, with Jonjo Shelvey the one getting the biggest headlines in the past twenty four hours.
Alan Pardew is said by various media to want the Swansea midfielder this summer as a replacement for Yohan Cabaye.
Swansea have now predictably pulled themselves away from relegation trouble and at the weekend they demolished Aston Villa 4-1, a match that included a contender for goal of the season from Shelvey.
I can visualise a good number of Newcastle fans who will be turning their noses up at the mention of Shelvey’s name but unless Mike Ashley changes his stance on transfer policy, and show some real ambition, then I think a player like Shelvey isn’t even a possibility.
Signed for £5m a year ago, 22 year old Shelvey has scored six goals, including one of those in Newcastle’s 3-0 defeat at the Liberty Stadium. I would assume in today’s market you would be looking at around £10m for a Premier League midfielder who can score goals.
I doubt very much if Ashley would pay that kind of fee plus the going Premier League wage for a player of that profile/fee. Even less likely is believing that Shelvey would see Newcastle as a step up when you consider the mess at Newcastle currently, as well as the fact he is at an ambitious growing club who proved they are looking to go places by winning the League Cup and then spending big in the transfer market on payers such as Wilfried Bony.
