Alan Shearer Thinks What Might Have Been For Newcastle United
It was 15 years ago yesterday that Alan Shearer made the Alex Ferguson Stand literally sway at the FA Cup semi-final. Or so I’ve been told anyway.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t old enough to get to that game although I have been constantly reminded of that day by those who were there.
The semi-final of 2005 is the last time Newcastle got to a semi-final and I was that particular disappointment.
Sheffield United are currently in League 1 and are one match away from a final. It is quite frankly absurd the lack of ambition which this club shows.
Alan Shearer punctuated this anger that the fans feel in the Chronicle today.
“When I look at the semi-finals of the FA Cup this year and I see Wigan, Sheffield United, and Hull I think what an incredible wasted opportunity for Newcastle it has been”.
This weekend it will be great to see two sides who have no chance of any other glory in the semi-finals. Arsene Wenger was right when he said that any side could win the FA Cup.
It is a dream that obviously does not occupy the mind of Mike Ashley too much. We haven’t won a trophy since 1969. The Moon landing was a more recent event than the last time we won a major trophy. There is also no indication that anything will change next year.
The latest change in the board, the promotion of Lee Charmley to be the new managing Director led him to say:
“Looking ahead to future seasons, our primary focus will remain (staying in…) the Premier League.”
This was the last thing that any Newcastle fan wanted to hear.
