Stalemate Means Newcastle United Still Have To Wait

It is a case of doing it all again for Ashington and Blyth Spartans as Newcastle United Under 21s / Reserves still wait to see who their Northumberland Senior Cup Final opponents will be.

Newcastle avoided extra time and the possibility of a replay when they defeated Whitley Bay on Monday night with a lat Rolando Aarons goal.

Replay Awaits At Blyth

However, in a match of changing fortunes, big rivals Ashington and Blyth Spartans were still locked together after two hours of action.

A crowd of 608 on Tuesday night gathered at a blustery Woodhorn Lane to see the visitors’ Dan Maguire give Spartans the lead after 48 minutes.

That lead though was to only last seven minutes as ex-Newcastle United striker Marc Walton levelled things up.

Ashington almost won it in the final seconds of normal time but it wasn’t to be, though the first half of extra time did see the home side take the lead for the first time through substitute Chris Glass.

Then with only five minutes of the second half of extra time remaining, with Dan Maguire grabbing his second of the night as he took advantage of hesitancy in the home defence and sent the tie into a replay.

The conditions didn’t help but the two hours of football was a tribute to the competitive nature and strength of non-league football in the north east and good luck to both teams in the replay.
