Shola Doesn’t Want To Stay On Bench? He Should Take It Away As A Retirement Present!

8 years ago

I had to laugh this morning when I saw headlines of Shola Ameobi saying he didn’t want to end his career on the bench at St.James’ Park.

Well he started his career on the bench, has spent most of his fourteen years (so far!!) on it and must surely now finish it on the bench and get no more even substitute appearances at the expense of players such as De Jong, Armstrong and even Cisse, who to varying degrees could possibly be the future of the club. The fact Shola hasn’t scored a league goal since December 2012 should mean he’s banned from stepping on the pitch anyway.

Shola had this to say to the Hartlepool Mail;

“It is frustrating but I have to just bide my time.

“I have loved my time at Newcastle and no more so that when I am playing, I just want to help the team and when it doesn’t happen it gets frustrating.

“I know the manager picks the team he thinks can win and we have to respect that as players but that doesn’t stop it being frustrating.

“I’m hoping I can help in the last nine games and get us as high up as we can.”

I still find it hard to believe that we’ve kept a ‘striker’ on Newcastle United’s books all his career without him ever having hit double figures in a Premier League season.

Let us just let him slip quietly away with his bench, or maybe put a plaque on it like they do with those ones in public parks after the departure of loved ones…
